Snow in Texas

Well, it looks like there might not be any real snow in Texas this year but we have been having a snowy winter at Sonshine Kids anyway! The Bear Class painted with a mixture of glue and salt then painted the salt with water colors. It was really neat to watch the colors spread and mix together. The end result was a colorful and sparkly 3D painting. We will definitely try it again!

This month the playdough center was filled with white sparkly dough, buttons, tiny top hats, and Popsicle sticks. The children made plenty of snow people plus some bar bells, hot dogs, and cars!

The Wheels On the Bus

Several of our children attend different classes in out school district and ride the bus between schools. All of our other children enjoy watching the bus come and go and I have heard some of them say that they would like to ride a bus too. Today we had a bug yellow visitor... A Hays CISD school bus! We all climbed up the stairs and found a place to sit then we sang "The Wheels On the Bus" together. The children had the opportunity to ask the bus driver questions, and all they wanted was to hear the horn and see the stop sign come out. As the bus drove off, we got a honk and a stop sign while we waved.

I'm Meeeelllting....

Sometime last summer, I found icicle Popsicle trays. I got very excited and began to make plans for them! Today I pulled out some Popsicles that I froze using water with food coloring.

I carried them outside and we talked about how icicles form when it is very cold (and that we may not see any in Texas). Then I clipped the icicles to tree branches. They made a colorful mobile and the sun shone beautifully through the different colors. The preschoolers predicted that the icicles would melt... and they did! It was fun to watch the children giggle as the cold drops landed on their heads. They even stuck out their tongues to try and catch some of the water.

Bear-y Cute

The Ladybug Class (older toddlers) are learning about bears this month. They are reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? as part of their learning, which is a great book to reinforce color concepts. Mrs. Cathy found gift bags in the colors of all of the Brown Bear animals and each day they will review a color. Inside each bag are items in that certain color that the children can explore. Today's color was brown and the children got to explore items like a large penny, a nut, a toy cow, and a leaf.

Mrs. Cathy introduced the children to Mr. Bear. He is a stuffed bear puppet with a clear pocket on his tummy. Each day Mrs. Cathy is placing a card in the pocket with a picture of the day's color and animal.

No Business Like Snow Business

The toddler sensory table is full of snow! Well, cotton balls and cotton rounds. There are also some mittens and colorful cups. The toddlers are going to love matching mittens and scooping up those snowballs!

The preschool class also has a sensory table full of faux snow. There are cotton balls, plastic snowflakes, pinecones, and decorative snow. I added a jewelry tree and some red mittens and it is the perfect set up for some wintry play!
